Beaver Stadium's possible renovation drawings revealed

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State athletic officials showed some potential new plans for renovations to Beaver Stadium Thursday.

The message presented to a Centre County chamber of business luncheon: "We're not tearing down Beaver Stadium."

The Deputy Director of Penn State's Athletic Department Phil Esten made that statement loud and clear. He revealed more details on the ongoing study on the stadium's possible future plus a peek into what renovated Beaver Stadium might look like.

It was about a week ago, that surveys were being distributed to football ticket holders and others on what their thoughts are about the iconic stadium and other athletic venues. Those sites included Rec Hall and the Bryce Jordan Center.

But every since the study was announced last fall, much of the attention is on Beaver Stadium and whether it will be renovated or replaced.

"That question comes a lot and the answer is simple," Esten said, "we're going to renovate."

Esten showed a presentation with drawings of other stadium renovations, but redone with Penn State images added as possible Beaver Stadium improvements. The changes could impact tailgating to luxury boxes.

Esten said their getting plenty of feedback, but surprised about the split opinion on whether the stadium benches should be replaced with individual seating.

"People have all kinds of opinions on all kinds of issues," he said.

When asked about the possibility of a private stadium management company running stadium operations like other facilities, he said that's not in the plans.

A consultant's study on all of Penn State's athletic facilities is expected to be completed this summer.
