Local students create art for Guthrie Hospital patients

Sayre, Bradford Co. (WOLF) — Local students are using their artistic talents to bring a smile to hospital patients while they have their meals.
Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital has teamed up with local Athens Area School District and Towanda Area School District .
Students grades K-8 designed holiday-themed artwork that will appear on patient meal trays throughout 2021.
"Our participating students have been so excited to know that their artwork is making a difference in the life of someone struggling with illness. We at Athens are glad to be a part of helping patients feel a little more comfortable in their time of struggle, said Elizabeth Ellis, Athens Area School District Elementary Art Teacher and Athens High School Ceramics Teacher.
On the trays patients will be able to enjoy holiday themed artwork and read the artists name, age and school!
"It's been a really great community art project because the kids have been really excited about it and anytime when they can make other people happy it's a good lesson to teach and they have just been really excited about making their art really colorful," said Lynn Underwood, Lynch Bustin Elementary Art Teacher.
"We have just had such a great response from the kids. They are so excited to share their art work with someone who is sick. Just because they know it's effected them and their community so it gives them a way to give back a little bit," explained Elizabeth Ellis.
Art has been an outlet for children to express their feelings while processing the challenges of the world from the pandemic.
"I think that it is empowering for them. Not only is it a creative outlet. The art room is a place where they can come in and be a little more relaxed," said Elizabeth Ellis.
