School district identifies teen killed after fall near YMCA camp

Authorities have released new information regarding a teen's death after a fall near a YMCA camp in Somerset County.

According to Somerset officials, a 15-year-old boy fell from rocks near the Cove Rocks on state forest property of Mount Davis Road.

The incident happened near the Deer Valley YMCA Family Camp just before 12:30 p.m. Monday.

The Norwin School District identified the teen as rising sophomore Nathan Kanczes.

According to the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, Kanczes was attending Teen Wilderness Camp through YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer. He was participating in a camp outing activity at the time of the fall.

Authorities say Kanczes was transported to Conemaugh Meyersdale Medical Center, where he later died.

"We are devastated by this tragic loss and our hearts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time," YMCA said in a statement. "Our primary concern is for the child's family and the emotional well-being and safety of our campers and staff."

"[We are] committed to supporting Nathan's family and friends during this time of profound sadness," according to a statement issued by the school district.

Officials say the camp has been canceled for the remainder of the week, and counseling services have been made available for campers and staff.

The school district is also offering grief counseling for students over the next week. Appointments can be made by contacting the high school guidance office at 724-861-3002.

State and local police agencies are investigating the incident. The cause of death has not been released.
