'Sticker shock:' Local drug coalition educates parents on alcohol consumption in minors

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Officials with the Cambria County Drug Coalition hosted an event that focused on alcohol prevention for minors.
The event, called "sticker shock,” was held in Johnstown, Portage and Hastings.
It focused on educating parents, friends, and family to not provide alcohol to minors, and the consequences that come with doing so.
The coalition is partnering with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board this year to launch a new campaign called "know when, know how,” which focuses on teaching parents to know when to talk to their kids about alcohol consumption and how to talk to them about it.
Natalie Kauffman, the executive director of the coalition, explains why it's important to educate parents, as well as minors.
"In the past, we've done something called 'parents who host', targeting parents and letting them know the criminal charges that come with providing alcohol to a minor. This year, we shifted it a little bit, did more education in the fact that we need parents to talk to their kids about alcohol consumption, and about how it changes the brain chemistry, our brains are not fully developed until we're 25."
She stresses that it's important for people to learn that no amount of alcohol consumption is safe.
